Formula: Total sleep hours = age (years) × 365 × nightly hours. Days asleep = total hours ÷ 24. Years asleep = total hours ÷ 8,766. Fraction of life = nightly hours ÷ 24 × 100%.
Real-world example: 36 years at 7.5 hours per night
A 36-year-old adult averaging 7.5 hours of sleep per night since birth: total sleep = 36 × 365 × 7.5 = 98,550 hours. Converted: 98,550 ÷ 24 = 4,106 days = 4,106 ÷ 365.25 = 11.24 years spent asleep. That is exactly 31.3% of life — nearly one third. What if sleep habits changed? At 9 hours per night: 36 × 365 × 9 = 118,260 hours = 4,928 days = 13.49 years asleep — 822 additional days or 2.25 more years asleep over the same lifespan.
