How to calculate running pace

  • Speed (km/h): speed = 60 ÷ pace (min/km)
  • Finish time: time = pace (min/km) × distance (km)

To convert pace from min/km to min/mile: multiply by 1.60934. So a pace of 5:00/km = 5 × 1.60934 = 8:03/mile. To convert speed from km/h to mph: multiply by 0.62137. The decimal part of a pace converts to seconds by multiplying by 60 — for example, a pace of 5.33 min/km = 5 minutes 20 seconds per km (0.33 × 60 = 20 s).

Detailed example with race paces

Let's say you run a 10K in 54 minutes. Your pace is: 54 ÷ 10 = 5.4 min/km, which converts to 5 minutes 24 seconds per km. In miles, that's 5.4 × 1.60934 = 8:41/mile. Your average speed is 60 ÷ 5.4 = 11.1 km/h (6.9 mph). This is a solid recreational runner pace — strong enough to race but still comfortable for a trained amateur.

Second example: you want to finish a half marathon in 2:05 (125 minutes). Your target pace is: 125 ÷ 21.0975 = 5.924 min/km = 5 minutes 55 seconds per km. In miles: 5.924 × 1.60934 = 9:32/mile. For a beginner targeting their first 5K without stopping, a pace between 7:00 and 9:00/km (11:15–14:30/mile, or 6.7–8.6 km/h) is perfectly reasonable. Running too fast too early leads to burnout and injury; using pace as a guide protects you from that trap. As fitness improves over weeks of consistent training, the same perceived effort will naturally produce a faster pace, and your easy pace will gradually shift lower.
