How to calculate average speed
The fundamental formula from kinematics is:
- Speed (mph): speed = distance (miles) ÷ time (hours)

Unit conversions: 1 mph = 1.60934 km/h = 0.44704 m/s. 1 km/h = 0.62137 mph = 0.27778 m/s. To convert minutes to decimal hours: divide by 60 (e.g., 45 min = 0.75 h; 2 h 45 min = 2.75 h). Always express time in decimal hours before dividing into distance.

Example 1 — Road trip: you drive 150 miles in 2 hours 45 minutes (2.75 hours). Average speed = 150 ÷ 2.75 = 54.5 mph. In km/h: 54.5 × 1.60934 = 87.7 km/h. In m/s: 54.5 × 0.44704 = 24.4 m/s. This trip includes driving on a mix of highway and surface roads, with no extended stops. If you had stopped for 20 minutes, the total elapsed time becomes 3 hours 5 minutes (3.083 h), and average speed drops to 150 ÷ 3.083 = 48.7 mph.
Example 2 — Cycling: a recreational cyclist rides 22 miles in 1 hour 15 minutes (1.25 hours). Average speed = 22 ÷ 1.25 = 17.6 mph (28.3 km/h). This is a solid pace for a trained club cyclist on flat terrain. Casual leisure riders average 10–12 mph, recreational cyclists 12–15 mph, and competitive club cyclists 18–22 mph. Mountain bike trails reduce these figures significantly due to technical terrain and elevation changes.
Example 3 — Running: a runner completes a 10K (6.21 miles) in 52 minutes (0.867 hours). Speed = 6.21 ÷ 0.867 = 7.16 mph (11.5 km/h). The concept of commercial speed in urban transport is closely related. A subway or bus line's commercial speed includes dwell time at stops, so a train traveling at 50 mph between stations but stopping every 2 minutes might have a commercial speed of only 20–25 mph. This is why average speed — not top speed — is the meaningful metric for commute planning.

Average speed uses total distance traveled (always positive), while average velocity uses displacement — the straight-line distance from start to finish, with direction. If you drive 100 miles in a loop and return to the start, your average speed is 100/time, but your average velocity is zero (zero net displacement). In most everyday calculations, speed is the relevant quantity.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours for the calculation?
Divide the minutes portion by 60 and add to the hours. Examples: 30 min = 0.5 h; 45 min = 0.75 h; 20 min = 0.333 h; 1 h 30 min = 1.5 h; 2 h 40 min = 2.667 h. This step is critical — using minutes directly instead of decimal hours in the formula gives a result 60 times too small.
